Who is Dr. Aafia Siddiqui?
A Brilliant Mind Dedicated to Education
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui exemplifies academic excellence and humanitarian dedication. A gifted student who earned a full scholarship to MIT, she went on to complete her PhD in cognitive neuroscience from Brandeis University, focusing her research on how children learn—a passion that would shape her life's mission.
Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Siddiqui was known for her extensive charitable work: helping Bosnian orphans, volunteering with autistic children, working in homes for the elderly, and developing plans for revolutionary educational reform in Pakistan.
A Mother's Unimaginable Tragedy
On March 30, 2003, a devastating tragedy struck: Dr. Siddiqui and her three young children disappeared in Karachi, Pakistan:
- Ahmed, age 6, and Mariam, age 4, were eventually returned to their aunt's care after years of separation
- Baby Suleman, just 6 months old, has never been found since that fateful day
- Dr. Siddiqui herself reappeared in 2008 under mysterious circumstances
This separation has created wounds that persist to this day, with Dr. Siddiqui serving an 86-year sentence that may prevent her from ever reuniting with her children—a punishment former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark called "the worst case of individual injustice I have ever witnessed."
Current Conditions: A Call for Urgent Action
At FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Siddiqui faces conditions that her lawyer describes as "worse than Guantanamo":
- Held in solitary confinement for 14 years—longer than any other woman in the federal system
- Denied access to an imam for religious guidance throughout her 16-year imprisonment
- Subjected to documented abuse and inadequate medical care
- Restricted from contact visits with family, including her sister who waited 20 years to see her
Recent legal efforts and diplomatic interventions offer hope for justice, but require sustained public support and advocacy to succeed.
"The worst case of individual injustice I have ever witnessed."
